Phix meets: Matt Thomson of THE AMAZONS

THE AMOUNT OF TIMES I’VE WALKED ON STAGE IN A PHIX JACKET AND FELT LIKE I COULD COMMAND A ROOM. A GREAT OUTFIT GIVES YOU SUPER POWERS.

PHIX Meets Matt Thomson: magnetic frontman of British indie rock band The Amazons. Known for their straightforward seventies-sound with a top ten charted debut album, Matt joins us to discuss leather jackets, Austin Butler and how statement pieces give you superpowers.

How would you describe your personal style?

Probably a median between my aspirations and limitations. I try to keep it simple. Hopefully timeless. Though time usually makes a mockery of that.

What are your 3 style essentials that you think every person needs in their wardrobe?

A good pair of boots. Friend of mine Joshua Speers inspired me to get some Blundstones on our last U.K. tour and I can’t take them off.

A great jacket, one that can withstand the elements but not cook you alive inside. It needs to have the right shape. I have a beautifully tough Wrangler denim jacket that sits just on the waist.

An accessory like a necklace or watch. I’ve worn a silver chain from Great Frog  for many many years and it completes every outfit.

What do you like most about Phix?

The accessibility to great quality statement pieces. The amount of times I’ve walked on stage in a Phix jacket and felt like I could command a room. A great outfit gives you super powers.

Best gig you've ever been to?

The most meaningful was the Taylor Hawkins memorial concert at Wembley. Soon as the Foos came on stage, I couldn’t stop the tears flowing. I never met Taylor but it felt like a true loss. He was the ultimate drummer. Hit like a jackhammer, technique of a maestro, never cared for the spotlight but stole it anyway, every single Foo’s show I saw.  He’s the one musician I truly cannot believe has gone.

One piece of clothing you can’t live without?

I love my leather jacket from Shangri-La Heritage. They’re a motorcycle/lifestyle company in Northern Italy and have been big supporters of the band. First time I wore it, I knew I’d be wearing it for life.

What's your proudest clothing purchase?

The suit I had made for the Future Dust tour. I met a lady called Judith at her warehouse studio in Downtown LA. She goes by the name of Rosecut and has created custom suits for everyone from Boy genius to Post Malone since. I’ve still got mine at home. Maybe I’ll dig it out for an anniversary show one day.

Is there anything you regret wearing? Why?

When I look back it’s not necessarily the pieces that I regret but how I wore them. I used to be and still am incredibly self conscious about my body, so I used to hide it in really baggy, unfitting clothing.

That’s been one of the journey’s of my 20s really. I hope it gets better.

We're really inspired by music history at PHIX. What is a song you can listen to on repeat?

Too many to choose so I’ll give you my top5, ever.

Heroes - David Bowie

Born To Run - Bruce Springsteen

Bittersweet Symphony - The Verve

A Change is Gonna Come - Sam Cooke

Gimme Shelter - Rolling Stones

Who has inspired your style the most? / Style icon?

In the last year I’ve been drawn to how Austin Butler dresses. He’s channeling a lot of the mid-century icons but it feels fresh.

Matty Healy is having a great moment too for similar reasons, though it feels he’s leaning more beatnik.
